Bye Bye Bruster's

On November 9th, Bruster’s Real Ice Cream in Dillsburg was torn down. The closure of Bruster’s comes as a result of the owner’s sale of the property to Mavis Discount Tire shop. Plans to sell the property have been ongoing since March, and this year was not the only time that threats of selling the property have occurred. In years past, the owners have received offers to sell the property but none of them were finalized, so Bruster’s has remained in Dillsburg until this fall. Throughout the years, Bruster’s has definitely been a dominant business in Dillsburg.

Bruster’s Real Ice Cream has had a location in Dillsburg since 2002, and for over 18 years, it has kept people coming back every year. So, why would the owners sell it? There is a lot of uncertainty as to why the owners would sell the business if it has been successful for over 15 years. Some may think that because of the COVID-19 outbreak that the owners and their store did not get as much profit, even though the store has stayed open throughout the entire pandemic. Also, the owners have another location only 30 minutes away in Etters, PA, and some people believe that if they received a substantial offer from the tire company, they would be willing to sell the Dillsburg store because of their other profiting location.

Many within the Dillsburg community have expressed their opinions on the situation after Curt Werner made a post about the demolishing of the Bruster’s building. Members of the community commented that they were deeply saddened by the destruction of the building and that it had been a great meeting place and hangout for a lot of the teenagers in the community. Others conveyed that there were a lot of people who were regulars to Bruster’s and that they were very upset with the news. The closure of Bruster’s also left a lot of teenagers without jobs in Dillsburg and within Northern. Numerous students at Northern have had to find other jobs and restart the process of finding a new job, which can be a strenuous process.

However, the destruction is done and Bruster’s is no longer a part of the Dillsburg community. Although there are other ice cream stores in Dillsburg that provide options to the people, almost all of these stores lack a hard ice cream option, which is what Bruster’s was known for. Now that Bruster’s has been closed and demolished, it will be interesting to see how the tire shop business does in the space that was once occupied by Bruster’s Real Ice Cream.
