Snow Days: A Chance for Rest or Learning?

When I think about snow days, I think about all the times I woke up with no school and hurried to go play out in the snow. No school, no homework, nothing of the sort for the whole day. Now, looking at how snow days were going to be done this year, I feel that our snow days are being taken away. I understand where the decision came from. If we still had our classes on the snow days, then we will get out of school when we are scheduled to. I understand the concept of it, but snow days were a brief, unexpected relief from the stress of the school week. It is a way for students to relax and enjoy time with themselves or to spend time with family. I personally think these snow days should not be taken from the faculty and the students. Maybe a compromise can be made where if we are out of school for so many days, then we can do a few classes or have work assigned like we would have if we were in school, but I feel that our snow days should be kept as days to relax and enjoy ourselves while settling down from the stress of school. I also know how the students who stay home and do the online courses feel as well because I, myself, do all but two of my classes from my house. We do not really get days off.

I want to say thank you to the students who did the Microsoft form about their opinions on snow days. A majority of students prefer to spend snow days doing what they want with an unexpected day off because of the weather. Many of you also said how you are not very fond of how district-wide snow days are now going to be spent doing school work or on a Microsoft Teams meeting for classes. You like to have those days to yourselves and do not wish for this to be continued in the future. When asked if you preferred the way snow days were done in the past compared to how they are now, a vast majority of students said that they prefer the way of the past. Students like unexpected days off from school when we can just enjoy ourselves instead of doing school work. There are those of us who understand that this new way is to keep us on track to finish school on the intended date, but we still want the option of having a nice break from school.
